EDITORIAL COMMENT: Joy's weekly reports in 1923 July 7 suggestion that European audiences are a different class grouping and that the middle class and artisans are the backbone of American audiences, but not great attenders in Europe. Additional text in Transcription.

Comments from Hugo Reisenfeld (managing director of the Rivoli and Rialto theatres, NY) "European theatres are of a type reminiscent of our old nickelodeons. The middle class and the artisans, the backbone of the motion picture attendance in this country rarely go to motion pictures in Europe." Report of NEA committee on visual education: institutions rely on free industrial and advertising films; less than 15,000 non-theatrical projection machines in US, half in schools.

Long Description:

Mrs. Oliver Harriman sailed recently to spend a few months abroad. While there she will inform herself concerning motion picture conditions, especially as they relate to the influence of American-made films upon foreign countries and will give the Committee the benefit of her observations. It will be interesting to compare Mrs. Harriman's observations on her return with those of Hugo Reisenfeld, Managing Director of the Rivoli and Rialto Theatres of New York City, two of the leading motion picture theatres in the United States. He states that European theatres are of a type reminiscent of our old nickelodeons. The middle class and the artisans, the backbone of the motion picture attendance in this country, rarely go to motion pictures in Europe.Report of the NEA motion picture committee, on applications of movies in schools.
