Publicity Previewing consultation with producers over films. Mr Dow is to get his films on public safety; two producers have called wanting the committee's opinion as to whether the story should be photographed, and if so, where the emphasis should be placed. Some criticisms have been received from the South and the Midwest about Bella Donna and The Pilgrim. In passing these on to Mr. Hays, I have suggested to him that they may serve to influence future productions.

Long Description:

19 of the organisations affiliated with the Committee on Public Relations (CPR) carried, in the most recent issue of their publications, constructive articles having to do with motion pictures. Most of these articles also called attention to specific pictures which had in the interest for their respective constituencies. During this period I have been called into conference, as your representative, concerning the production of two pictures. In both cases the producer wanted the committee's opinion as to whether the story should be photographed, and if so, where the emphasis should be placed. As a result of a conference with the members of the committee, who have a particular interest in the subject matter of the first picture, we were able to make suggestions which will undoubtedly result in a strong picture. We are still in conference regarding concerning the second picture. Regardless of the outcome, the committee will have had an opportunity to express an opinion in the initial stages of production where its suggestions have a chance to be constructive. An e.g. of a somewhat similar nature has to do with the picture called "The Ten Commandments" which is now being produced on the Coast. The producers are seeking the advice of representative clergymen to the end that the production may conform to accepted religious standards. Although I have received no comments concerning "Bella Donna" and "The Pilgrim" from members of the committee, I have passed on to Mr. Hays the few scattered protests which I have received from individuals living, for the most part, in the south and middle west. In passing these on to Mr. Hays, I have suggested to him that they may influence future producers.
