There have been a number of objections to Smiling Irish Eyes on "racial" grounds. Russell comments, "You will perhaps want to keep all of this together for Col. Joy's consideration when he returns. It seems ... that there is a very definite movement to seek to eliminate some of the portrayals of the Irish as has heretofore been accomplished on stage and screen."
