'Pictorial Beauty in the Photoplay." The art director looks for opportunities to create "interesting compositions ... a series of fixed and moving patterns." His aesthetic preoccupations make him view the elements within the screen -- cars, typewriters etc. -- in terms of form rather than function. Menzies relates this perspective to the influence of modern advertising. Notes influence of sound on aesthetic priorities, and on shape and texture of sets.
