Ramsaye provides a history of the industry, emphasising that the Motion Picture Patents Company was run by Gentiles, and arguing that "The motion picture is a photographic report on the psychoanalysis of a nation ... Motion picture makers have no larger hand in the trend of life today than other large mercantile interests, the makers of newspapers, silk stockings, perfumery, automobiles and saxophones. The motion picture like other media of publicity can speed up social reactions, but it does not create them."
