About
Theatre-owner and executive. With Adolph Zukor, Loew established a penny arcade business in 1903, then moved into small-time vaudeville, mixing vaudeville performances with motion picture exhibition, in 1906. He established the Fort George Amusement company with Nicholas and Joseph Schenck in 1906, and developed Loew Theatrical Enterprises, a large New York-based theatre circuit, during the next decade, becoming the dominant theatre-owner in New York and controlling 150 theatres when he formed Loew’s, Inc. in 1920. At the same time he took over the production company Metro Pictures, and later Goldwyn Productions and Louis B. Mayer Productions, creating Metro-Goldwyn Pictures in 1924.
