Frank Garbutt


MPPDA contact in Los Angeles for negotiations with and information on Labor unions in the 1920s. Moving to Los Angeles as a boy in the 1880s, Garbutt made his fortune sinking one of the first oil wells in the city, became a director of the Union Oil Company and was involved with several other oil concerns.  By 1900 he was one of the wealthiest businessmen in Los Angeles, with diverse interests including lumber, printing and real estate. In 1913 Garbutt underwrote the production company Bosworth Inc., and in 1916 merged Bosworth with Famous Players. He was a key figure in the consolidation of Famous Players-Lasky and Paramount in 1917 and remained a Paramount executive into the 1920s.
