General manager and vice-president, Paramount Publix Corporation, and subsequently President of Twentieth-Century Fox Corp. A self-made businessman, he entered the motion picture industry in 1916, working first for Vitagraph and then as a distribution manager for Famous Players. In May 1919 he became FPL’s general sales manager, and in January 1921, general manager of distribution. Elected to the board of directors of Paramount in 1922, he became the company’s general manager and vice-president in 1927. He resigned in January, 1932 to become president of Fox Film Corp., and he was instrumental in merging Fox with Twentieth Century Pictures Inc., to form Twentieth-Century Fox Corp. in August 1935.
