EDITORIAL COMMENT: A very quotable memo.

Explanation of the operation of the Production Code machinery during its first year. Includes synopsis of action and negotiation on each MGM picture during the year.Joy notes the prevalence of graphic and sophisticated source material, but feels that delicacy of treatment should allow virtually anything to be put on the screen. Cites number of changes made in scripts and negatives, but admits that his advice is sometimes ignored. Includes details of work done on all MGM output since the introduction of the Code.

Long Description:

29 April 1931 Elaboration by Joy to Hays of SRC report. Suggests that on 1/3 of pictures consultations began "the moment it was proposed to produce a story having dangerous possibilities." They have asked for 975 major changes in 286 scripts submitted, and 316 major changes in 337 pictures submitted for approval. He lists the negotiations with MGM during this period -- on 46 films.
