EDITORIAL COMMENT: Documents on Clean Pastures, on which we have some WB material.

Rejection of the WB short "Clean Pastures" as a travesty of religion and the "deepest religious emotions in the hearts of a primitive people."

Long Description:

Documents on Clean Pastures, on which we have some WB material. 13 October 1937, Breen and Harmon to Hays: "... While it is true that censor boards in two or three states approved this short subject, our opinion that it will give offense to a substantial number of people, appears to be corroborated by the actions of the Pennsylvania State board of Censors and the Chicago censor board in rejecting this short subject. No script was ever submitted in advance to the PCA, not even the dialogue continuity was made available until less than a week ago, several months after the picture was presented for review and rejected. If the script had been submitted, the danger would have been noted and avoided. Green Pastures was a dignified, moving portrayal of the deepest religious emotions in the hearts of a primitive people. Clean Pastures, on the other hand, in our judgment, is a travesty and burlesque which ridicules the same religious instincts and customs and makes light of some of the most sacred feelings in the hearts and minds of many Christians everywhere."
