About

Founder and president of The Caddo Company, owner of the Hughes Tool Company and extensive oil interests. Entered the motion picture industry in 1926, and produced a series of controversial productions including The Racket (1927), Hell’s Angels (1930), and Scarface (1932). Withdrew from the industry for ten years after the commercial failure of Scarface, entering the aviation industry.  Hughes returned to Hollywood in 1939 to produce The Outlaw, which incurred as many problems with the Production Code as his earlier films had.  In 1948 he acquired a controlling interest in RKO and stripped its assets, selling the company off in 1955.
